Charles Shreiner succeeded his father to become the school's second Headmaster (1964-1987). An outstanding athlete in whatever sport he pursued, his interests included baseball, soccer, track, tennis, skating, bowling, golf and especially fishing. He was the captain of the undefeated 1941 baseball team at Episcopal Academy. He returned from WWII service in the Pacific Theater to become a three-letter winner at Temple University. Upon graduation, Charlie gave up an opportunity to pitch for the Phillies and chose instead to dedicate himself to CFS. One day in 1954, he promised to give his bright red hunting hat to any boy who broke a school record. Richard Leary ‘54 soon won that honor by surpassing the javelin record. A tradition was born, and for years, record-breaking students would receive a red hat. Charlie and his wife, Shirley, were fixtures on the CFS sidelines for many years, cheering, applauding, sometimes consoling, unwavering in spirit and support for the school and students they loved so dearly.
