Dan Hutchinson '52 was a superb all-around athlete in football, basketball, and track & field. A classmate described his exploits on the football field by saying, "Dan ran, he passed, he played linebacker...he made sure our opponents knew who he was." On the basketball court, Dan played center, and was the leading scorer for the team. In track & field, he excelled in field and both short and long distance running. Rules limited him to five events, which often translated into five first-place finishes. Dan was innovative, as well, being an early proponent of the western roll approach for the high jump and had his own unique technique for the long jump. He was the first CFS athlete to jump six feet in the high jump, a school record. He also graduated as the school’s record holder in the javelin.
